Scholarships form an integral part of Australia’s aid program and help to build critical skills and knowledge. The Australia Awards offer an effective and efficient model to deliver Australia’s assistance while supporting a range of strategic foreign policy, economic diplomacy and development objectives across key sectors.
Australia Awards offers the next generation of global leaders an opportunity to undertake study, research and professional development. Australia Awards opportunities are offered annually and are managed by the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT). Since 2011, Australia has provided more than 6,000 Australia Awards to applicants from 52 African countries.
Award types include master’s level scholarships and post-graduate short courses that aim to support the leadership needs of African professionals and to focus training on areas relevant to Africa’s development priorities. Through study and practical experience, scholars gain skills and knowledge that will help drive economic and social development in their home countries. Study and training is offered in the following priority sectors: climate change, agriculture and food security, mining and energy, and foreign policy and international security.
