Alumni unite in Madagascar to Launch Mining and Energy Community of Practice

On 15 May 2025, alumni from nine African countries convened in Antananarivo, Madagascar, to establish the Australia Awards Mining and Energy Community of Practice (CoP) during a regional workshop.

Her Excellency Ms. Kate Chamley, Australian Ambassador to Madagascar, hosted members of the newly formed CoP Executive Committee, alongside representatives from Women in Mining and Resources Madagascar (WIMR-MADA). The event, held under the banner of Australia Awards Africa, brought together a diverse group of professionals committed to advancing inclusive and sustainable practices in the mining and energy sectors.

It was wonderful to hear about our alumni’s experiences leading change in their countries – they are truly inspirational. Our alumni are the bridge between Australia and Africa,” said Ambassador Chamley, expressing her pride in the alumni’s achievements and their role in fostering international collaboration.

The workshop featured engaging discussions, including insights from two local mining companies, powerful contributions from women working across the mining value chain, and perspectives from delegates representing nine African nations. A highlight of the event was a live demonstration by alum Dominique Ramarosata, showcasing the work of the Malagasy Gem Lab.

Preceding the main workshop, the CoP Executive Committee held a strategic planning session on 14 May. During this session, the following leadership team was elected:

  • Chair: Vivian Obiadika (Nigeria)
  • Vice-Chair: Aristide Belemsobgo (Burkina Faso)
  • Secretary: Dr. Rosine Atafeinam Abalo (Togo)
  • Communications & Public Relations: Elyvin Nkhonjera (Malawi)

On the last day (16 May 2025), members of the Malagasy Alumni Association gathered for their annual planning meeting, which included a series of talks and collaborative sessions.

This landmark event marks a first step in strengthening cooperation and knowledge exchange in the mining and energy sectors, driven by the expertise and leadership of Australia Awards alumni in the CoP.
