Emilline Law Kwang: Women Leading and Influencing

Emilline Law Kwang recently shared her journey on June 18 2024 at a virtual session with other disability leaders co-hosted by WLI, Australia Awards Africa and Australia Awards Indonesia. As an Australia Awards alumna from Mauritius, she completed her Masters in Public Policy at Monash University in 2021 and has subsequently emerged as a powerful advocate for disability inclusion.

Born with cerebral palsy, Emilline initially felt isolated due to the limited exposure to others with disabilities. However, her journey to Australia was transformative, where she witnessed the autonomy that people with disabilities could achieve through accessible environments.

Her experience in Australia inspired her advocacy back home in Mauritius, where she led the “Normalising the Inclusion of People with Disabilities in Mauritius” campaign. This campaign, funded by the Australian High Commission in Port Louis through the Direct Aid Program, focused on raising awareness about inclusive policies and accessible infrastructure, culminating in a three-day workshop that gathered over 100 participants to discuss disability inclusion strategies.

Emilline’s leadership continues to pave the way for greater accessibility and inclusion, and her work has been integral to the progress made in Mauritius’ disability rights, including the enactment of The Protection and Promotion of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act in 2024.
