The Australia Awards Alumni Association of The Gambia has successfully completed a transformative small grant project, culminating in the inauguration of a new water borehole in the Jiboroh Kuta community. Funded by the Australian High Commission in Abuja, the borehole was officially inaugurated on 6 September 2025 during a vibrant ceremony attended by local leaders, community members, and alumni association officials.
For years, the 300-household community relied on a single borehole, often traveling long distances to access clean water. This new facility marks a significant milestone in addressing the community’s persistent water scarcity challenges.
The Australian High Commission generously contributed 90% of the project’s funding, with the remaining support raised by the community itself – demonstrating a strong spirit of collaboration and ownership.
“This borehole is more than just infrastructure – it’s a beacon of hope and progress,” said Baboucarr M.A. Saine, President of the Australia Awards Alumni Association in The Gambia. “Access to safe and potable drinking water is a basic human right, not a luxury. We are deeply grateful to the Australian High Commission for their support and to the Jiboroh community for their hospitality and commitment.”
Baboucarr also emphasised the importance of sustainability, urging the community to take full ownership of the facility to ensure its long-term viability for future generations. Another association leader Baboucarr Joof highlighted the borehole’s particular impact on vulnerable groups – women, children, and the elderly have been the most affected by the water crisis. This new facility will significantly ease their burden and improve daily life.
The association expressed their hope that the collaboration between the alumni and the Australian High Commission will continue to grow from strength to strength.
