World Book Day 2025: St. Anthony Primary School in Zambia benefits from ZAAA’s donation

To commemorate World Book and Copyright Day on 23 April 2025, the Zambia Australia Alumni Association (ZAAA) donated 220 new and used books to St. Anthony Primary School in Kitwe.

The handover event was graced by the District Education Board Secretary for Kitwe District, represented by Ms. Catherine Kunda, the District Education Standard Officer. She appreciated the gesture and encouraged the teachers and pupils to guard the books jealously as they are vital resources for learners. She also urged the Head Teacher and his team to utilise the material to enhance their delivery, as it is a vital resource for the learners.

Speaking at the same event, the Head Teacher, Mr. Mukhuzo Kaboba, expressed heartfelt gratitude, noting that the donation could not have come at a better time. “Our school was in urgent need of books for our students. This generous donation will significantly enhance the quality of education by increasing the number of learning materials in circulation. It will benefit both our pupils and teaching staff alike,” he said.

Mr. Moonga, a representative of the Zambia Library Association, also applauded the initiative, emphasising the transformative power of books in a child’s early education. “Books are more than just pages – books are bridges that are pathways to knowledge, empowerment, and development,” he stated.

Eng. Jackson Kafwanka, speaking on behalf of ZAAA, reiterated the association’s commitment to national development: “As alumni, we are proud to give back to our communities. Our mission goes beyond academia; we are committed to contributing meaningfully to Zambia’s future in sustainable and impactful ways.”

ZAAA selected St. Anthony Primary School as the recipient due to limited access to learning materials. Located in a low-income, peri-urban area of Kitwe, the school predominantly serves a population of students from vulnerable backgrounds. The donation is a step toward bridging the educational resource gap and ensuring every child has access to the tools they need to succeed.

ZAAA members: Jackson Kafwanka, Mwelwa Musosha, Martha Mutalange, and Lilian Bwanali, were present during the handover of the donation.
