Mutton monitoring in Morocco

Abderrahmane Jannoune is the genetics and breeding manager at the National Association of Sheep and Goat Breeders in Morocco, which is partnering with Agwest, part of the West Australian Department of Agriculture and Food, to establish a livestock farming centre near the Atlas Mountains.

The partnership will help implement uniform standards of quality among breeders and provide a forum where breeders can share industry knowledge.

Abderrahmane says that while studying for his Australia Award , he received high-level training from a team of scientists and researchers from the University of New England. “This helped improve my technical and managerial skills in livestock farming and enabled me to discover Australian technological advancements in the field,” he says.

“The course also allowed me to develop a program of genetic improvement for mutton quality in Morocco through ultrasound technology.”

This pilot is currently being used by industry professionals in Morocco and will be carried out in conjunction with a team from Agwest.
